Dummy

It is a rare and special thing when an album transcends a decade and manages to sound relevant and amazing through the years. (I feel like an old geezer even writing that sentence) I can’t believe that Portishead’s Dummy is almost 19 years old. Except that I remember what a melodramatic teen I was when I bought it. This is an albumy album. Many, many great songs to be enjoyed as a whole, but it is every bit as good as it ever was. Trust. I love the ambient TripHop genre and Beth Gibbons voice is otherworldly. Today’s song, “Sour Times” sounds like it could be plucked from any time–it’s spy-sounding music sounds just like the intro for  Mad Men.  “Roads” is another favorite and “Glory Box” just might be the slinkiest song of all time.  Happy Friday! Enjoy.

June 26th

So DOMA went down today and as a consequence, my brother and his husband can enjoy equal rights. This is a good thing for everyone, I think. I feel very optimistic about people today.

A HUGE part of my love of music stems from many car rides to ballet as a kid, driven by brother, who has always loved music. Bryce’s influence in my selections continues today. Here is a recent recommendation from him that I am loving. I’ve been trying to parse out who this selection reminds me of and the best I can come up with is if the Shins and the Beach Boys had a baby.

Mikal Cronin “Weight”

rationed Nick

I always have internal conflict over Nick Drake. I really love his voice and his music, but it hits a dark chord within me that I don’t usually like to play with. And I am not one to shy away from depressing music…I don’t know if it is because he committed suicide or what (that never stopped me from loving Joy Division) but I take my Nick in small doses.

I  remember listening to him the summer after senior year of high school and sitting in a 7-11 parking lot and some strange lady came knocking on my window, asking me to roll down my window and tell her who I was listening to. She said it was the most beautiful voice she’d ever heard. There is something about that voice, I would agree.

I really love this song.

“Poor Boy”

Oh me oh my

When I say I don’t like country I only kind of mean it.  No I really mean it but for the sake of this post humor me  I like crossover artists somewhat, for sure not that song “Cruise” which is on the radio all the time. But, I especially like it when mainstream singers take a great country song and make it their own, or vice versa. The hybrid of styles can yield something really great. This song was originally a Gillian Welch song, has been also done by Miranda Lambert and is shown here by Blind Pilot. I like it a lot.

80s on the Brain

I was dancing in the kitchen this morning and noticed my 6 year old averting her eyes. She is six and already embarrassed by me?!  We are all 80s around here this week as I am hosting an 80s birthday party tomorrow. Here is a throwback complete with the worst dancing evah… I only hope I dance better than this!

The Stars Align

I have days when I am really klutzy and late everywhere I go. They are invariably the days that the dog escapes and runs down the street, and in chasing her I realize that I am still in something loosely based on pajamas. These are the days when the plumber comes before the four hour window I was given and I, of course, am not home.

BUT, there are also days when everything is cracking, somehow I am ahead of schedule for every thing I have to get done. I am a checklist crossing fool. And yes, I will check that box just because it feels amazing to do so. EVEN if the list is 5 seconds from being tossed. I have two different checklist apps on my phone, but there is something about physically tossing my list of stuff I’ve gotten done. Anyway, I am getting off point. TODAY, I am literally pinging with excitement because through some sort of Ahhhh-mazing stroke of serendipity I am going to see this band in concert.

I am new to Lord Huron, but I am OBSESSED with this song. Can’t. Get. Enough. I was reading up on them and listening to other stuff in advance of this post and decided that I’d check to see if they were coming to Dallas anytime soon. Well, they are opening for Alt-J and I am already going to that concert. I am not too proud to admit that I was literally doing jumpy claps in my kitchen.
